Ssdi Benefits

Posted on March 24, 2010.
Ssdi BenefitsAfter being qualified for SSDI, why should I wait 24 months to receive Medicare benefits?

I have recently been awarded SSDI benefits. The date of disability has been set as the date to 6/1/06 I became eligible to begin receiving benefits 11/1/06. I was told that I will become eligible for Medicare benefits on 11/1/08. Why this gap in coverage?

It seems incomprehensible that the government would handicap someone, but deny the means to take care of you.

Ah, there is a real political and historical reasons for this gap. My little sister started to explain it to me, she is a lawyer SSDI. Here's what she said:

In fact, it is 29 months. When theSocial Security Act was created almost everyone had short and long term disability plans through work. It was almost automatic that we got 6 months of disability in the short term, followed by two years of long-term disability for the own occupation test. Therefore, people do not need medical coverage for the first 29 months. These payments have been enough SOL. Why 29 months and not 30, you ask? Because Social Security does not start until the first day of the month after you became disabled to find the first full month you are disabled.

The wait is 24 months. The government did this for two reasons. First and foremost for saving money and because many have disability policies to close the gap. The second reason is because some people are able to return to work and off disability. They set the waiting time to 24 months because it is a fair overall time for everyone without being too difficult for some. If they do not have time to wait Medicare go bankrupt if no one is there.
