Ncua Insurance Coverage

Posted on March 1, 2010.
Ncua Insurance CoverageFDIC vs. Ncua??

I have a good understanding of the amounts FDIC guarantee depositor. Can someone enlighten me on how the insurance coverage Ncua (credit unions) is comparable to the coverage of the FDIC?

You can read all of this on their website:

http://www.ncua.gov/AboutNCUA/Index.htm

You can check the status of a bank's FDIC insurance by going to the FDIC's Bank Find tool and typing the name of the bank.

The reason you might not recognize many names on the top of the list of interest rates as most banks offer the best money market rates now are Internet banks only. They are often able to offer these high rates because they lack the overhead of bank branches. Some have names you recognize, such as huge insurance company MetLife, which now has a bank on the Internet only. And ING, whose Orange Account is always near the top of the list of interest rates, is an international giant insurance company.

The majority of credit unions in the nation are federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (Ncua), the National Credit Union Insurance Fund offers the same coverage as the FDIC does for banks and savings. But many credit unions that carry private insurance. If a credit union is not a sign at the door or window of the cashier saying, "provided by the Ncua, wondering if the institution has a federal insurance or request. If the answer is no, take your money elsewhere.

And there used to be FSLIC savings and loans.

FDIC and Ncua have equal coverage.
