Errors, omissions and inaccuracies are common problems in credit reports. Under federal law, the three major credit bureaus are mandated to investigate and make corrections if a consumer disputes the information contained in your credit report. Once the Office has received the letter case, they should contact the creditor in question immediately and clarify the issue. This survey should only take a maximum of 30 days and the consumer must be sent a response within that period.

If the dispute is proven valid and correct, the credit bureau that investigated the question will be to inform the credit bureaus so they can have their own reports updated accordingly. The credit bureau will also send the complainant a copy of his credit report updated without charge. However, if the issue has not been resolved, the credit bureau will advise the complainant of the results of the investigation.

Credit reporting is a serious commitment and if a credit bureau has failed to do its duty, you have the right to file a complaint against it by the Federal Trade Commission.
